The ability to hyperfocus can be as debilitating as attention deficit, and I’m a bit tired of people thinking that it’s the “good side” of having ADHD.

I’m not saying that hyperfocus is always a bad thing, but today I got so focused on reading a book that I didn’t notice that the beetroot I was cooking was aflame until my eyes started watering from the smoke. I was literally sitting 2 meters away from the stove. The beetroot was burning for several minutes judging by the amount of smoke and charcoal in the pot.

When I get overly focused on something, it’s always something trivial like a game or a book; very rarely on something even remotely useful. I don’t pay attention to anything happening around me, unless something startles me out of it. It just takes away hours that I could’ve spent doing something that I actually need to do :(
