Shooting star/ufo?

No clue how to start this question however me and a few friends were walking at around midnight through the pentlands, scotland and we saw what appeared to be a star (not moving initially) fall directly downwards and get brighter as it descended, this was very fast and lasted less than a second. We would have thought it was a meteor if it hadnt been still for a while before falling. What could this have been?
