Newbie at at kitchen cabinets - tips, pitfalls?

I'm going to take my first try at kitchen cabinets - any tips, tricks, pitfalls to avoid for the newcomer? Non-obvious things that would be helpful to know ahead of time?

I'll do my Google research ahead of time, within reason. Initially I'm thinking 1/2" baltic birch for the boxes with hardwood faces/doors. I could go 3/4" if it's enough better to be worth it, but was leaning toward 1/2" for weight and cost.

Doors will likely be either stile and rail - maybe with a wood panel, maybe with glass - or a solid panel, whichever the other half decides she likes better.

All advice welcome! Thanks!
