How Were Regular Battalions Organized

Like the title says, how were regular US battlions organized and were they even used. Every reference to a company in a regular regiment only talks about the company not the battalion is was assigned to. If that makes any sense.

Were companies lettered by eight, restarting with the next battalion? Or did it simply go to the 24th letter?
