I am discerning becoming Catholic and I have a question about confession

Although I am familiar with confession and have done some research, I still have one big question. If I openly confess my sins directly to God, is that not considered valid by the Church? If not, why would me admitting my sins in prayer not be considered true confession? Thanks!
