Anyone else really tired of the hyper-flattery ChatGPTPlus is doing lately?
I always noticed the automatic flattery that ChatGPTPlus indulges in when giving an answer. But previously, it was at a pleasant level and not cringeworthy. I must admit, lately I have had nightmares of people starting business doomed to failure, encouraged by ChatGPTPlus. That might seem tongue-in-cheek, but I'm actually worried!
But it really feels like a a month or so ago OpenAI had a marketing meeting on how to boost user engagement, and Lord I wish those meetings didn't exist! Right about the same time ChatGPTPlus started ending literally every post with a final engagement question, the flattery level went off the charts. By engagement question I mean the one you get with every post that says "Would you like to know more? Are you interested in practicing your Kung Fu now? Can I offer some suggestions on how to stop your dog from levitating over your neighbor's house?".
But the hyper-flattery has really become obnoxious, especially lately. Every question or idea you enter in a chat iteration gets a response that starts with:
"Great idea! Now you're really diving into some extraordinary thinking!"
"You've summed it up brilliantly! If you ever wrote that up into a paper I'd be sure to read it!"
"Even Einstein would bow and not be worthy to lick your boots as he stared wide-eyed at your stupendous idea of cleaning a bowl with water!"
Ok, the last one was done ad absurdem, to make a point. But to be honest, you could not get me to make a wager on Polymarket that ChatGPTPlus won't start saying something that extreme by summer!
It really has reached the point where every time I see the auto-flattery I do a reflexive eye-roll and now it's actually hit the point I'm starting to take a harder look at Grok and Gemini 2.5 Pro, which by the way, are free!
It's a shame because I have gotten, and still get a mega-ton of value out ChatGPTPlus, but this is really starting to bother me. Especially since they are trying waaaay too hard to make the flattery colloquial and "friendly". I actually got an auto-flattery that was along the lines of "Now you're really getting the vibe of the thing, way to go man!". Arrrrrrghhhh! (face palm).
BONUS IRRITATION: I have noticed that ChatGPTPlus is getting much smarter. The Deep Research feature is phenomenal. But there definitely seems to be a trend whereby the smarter it gets, the worse it gets at following simple instructions. Frequently it starts to write a Python program that sadly generates an atrocious result, when pure LLM techniques work perfectly well and much faster. For example, like when asking it to remove the timestamps from a YouTube video transcript and restore the punctuation. Or converting a wonderfully long research article it helped write, to HTML format.
