Free agency recap - Expectation=Improve Defense vs. Reality=Improve Offense
We expected massive defensive improvement in FA. We got some key re-signings, Harris Kinlaw Wise and Jones, and pretty much a lot of continuity. We all thought we would be killers in the FA market for defensive improvement - pass rushers (Myles Garrett, Trey Hendrickson, Bosa, Khalil Mack) or corners (DJ Reed was a highly talked about target on here).
The market wasn't there. At least not without massively overpaying for it.
Adam Peters clearly tested the defensive market but had his numbers and stuck to his guns. Amazing to have a GM in Washington who doesn't sell the farm for one guy, isn't it?
We all thought the defense would be the main beneficiary of FA but instead it looks like the offense is the winner. We added Deebo, a bona fide WR 2, which absolutely improves our offense immediately whenever he's on the field. Going from OZ/NB/DB to Deebo at WR 2 is a massive, and I mean massive, upgrade. The main move is Tunsil, obviously, and I don't think we had LT on our bingo cards because most of us felt like Coleman was pretty good at LT and could develop, however AP and co. saw the opportunity to massively impact our offensive line at a good price and took it.
The Tunsil deal is a game changer for our offense. A top 5 pass pro LT needs little explanation as far as his impact on the field. What it does for the ROSTER AS A WHOLE though is what I am most excited about. Coleman shifts out of LT now, either to G or RT, where he will be on the field if he's an upgrade (and he will be over at least Wylie/Allegretti).
Three scenarios:
Coleman to G, Allegretti to backup. (TWO POSITIONS UPGRADED)
Coleman to RT, Wylie to backup (TWO POSITIONS UPGRADED)
Coleman to RT, Wylie to G, Allegretti to backup (THREE POSITIONS UPGRADED)
The Tunsil move improves at least 2 offensive line positions, if not three. This is a massive, massive improvement in protection for Jayden. Giving him more time, less pressure, and a real upgrade at WR 2 should see this offense highly improved despite how great it was last year. A lot to be excited about on the offensive side of the ball.
Like many of you, I'm super excited for the draft where I expect many holes to be addressed on defense (pass rusher) and hopefully we get a RB upgrade as well. I just want to say it loud and clearly that I love what AP was able to accomplish to improve our team despite the FA market going wonkily different than what we thought it would. We are in good hands, and I look forward to the draft to see this man continue cooking!
