Swedish Country Music

Hello everyone, in these dark times, I will try to cheer you up by listing some country songs/bands/artists from Sweden that I like and listen to. Of course, there are many more to name or that should be mentioned, but I've limited it to artists I regularly listen to. Enjoy and don't forget to look up some of the other songs these artists/bands recorded, even if maybe most of them will be in Swedish!

Starting with some new/modern:

Tricky Trail - Kazoo
The band from Dals-Ed started in 2010 and has played a little on and off the last few years, but still going strong! They got 2nd place in the Swedish Country Music Championship in 2011 and won in 2014.

Don Redmon - Between a Father And a Son
Andreas founded Don Redmon Band in the early 2000s along with his dad after a trip to Nashville. They toured all over Sweden and won the contest mentioned before two times. As he started his solo career a few years ago, he calls himself Don Redmon.

Meadow Creek - Set the world on fire
This duo consists of the married couple Peter and Linda Dahl, who both has been many years in the music industry before they started this Americana-duo. You can really hear the love in all of their songs, and I just love them!

Downhill Bluegrass Band & Maxida Märak - Nikesunnas Jojk
These guys have been quite successful both in Sweden and in the US. They have played at the International Bluegrass Music Association in Nashville several times. They play both traditional bluegrass but also push the limits and experiments. The song I've linked is a crossover between bluegrass and jojk, a style of singing by the Sámi people in northern Norway, Sweden, and Finland and I think it's just an amazing example of that music can connect all ethnicities.

Jill Johnson & Doug Seegers - We'll Sweep Out the Ashes In The Morning
Jill has been in the country music industry since she was 14 years old and has been successful both in Sweden and in the States. Her breakthrough was in 1998 when won Melodifestivalen, translated "the Melody Festival" (one of the biggest music competitions in Sweden). She has toured several times in the US and held a TV show in Nashville called "Jills veranda". Long story short, that's where she found the then homeless Doug Seegers performing on the street and decided to give him a chance. I think they make an awesome duo together.

Lasse Stefanz - Have You Ever Been Lonley?
These guys have been around since 1967 as one of the most iconic Swedish "dansband" which directly translates to "dance band" (I've thought of making a separate post explaining this Nordic country-influenced genre). Although most Swedes will just consider them as just dansband, I think they should be worth mentioning since they are so strongly influenced by the American country music scene and have done several covers of famous country names like Merle Haggard, Dwight Yoakam, Charley Pride etc. They mostly sing in Swedish, but I found a great song sung by them live in English for you to hear.

Kikki Danielsson - Don't Slam the Door
She's been considered, and still is, the "Country Queen of Sweden". She first gained recognition as the lead singer in Wizex, another famous Swedish dansband (which she joined in 1973). She's got a bunch of number ones, both as solo and in collaborations. She's even an honorary citizen in Nashville and she's won Melodifestivalen several times.

Mats Rådberg - In the Early Morning Rain
Mats got famous with his band Rank Strangers (later renamed "Rankarna") in the 60s. Their biggest hit was "Peta in en pinne i brasan" in 1983 which is a translated cover of Put Another Log in the Fire. Most of the songs are in Swedish but they all have the "country feeling". Mats sadly passed away in 2020 from cancer. In his last year, he recorded what was his last record and it was released shortly after his death.

Hasse Andersson - Angel Buddy
Hasse got famous in the 80s with his band "Kvinnaböske Band" and the song "Skomagare Anton". He comes from the province of Skåne and plays, in what Swedish producers called, "Skåntry" (People from Skåne have a very noticeable accent). But his biggest hit of all time is "Änglahund" which is both sad and funny at the same time. The song is originally in Swedish but I will link an English version so that you all can understand the lyrics. Fun fact, the song even got a metal cover by the Swedish metal band "Mustasch" (link to that one: link). Almost every song recorded by him is in Swedish.
