Newbie to DnD and want to be prepared.

I am building my character for my first campaign and I want to make sure I do my research. Is there any sources I should look into when doing research on my species? I want to make sure my backstory fits the lore of my species in DnD and I'm not making too many things up that don't fit. The handbook is helpful, but doesn't exactly give me any lore to dig into.
