Creative but impractical uses of magic
Next session that I DM, the party will likely have the opportunity to see a magic show put on by some low- to mid-level magic users. Basically a county fair to bring in revenue and all the best wizards and sorcerers across the land come to show off their powers to the common folk who don’t get to see magic in their day-to-day lives.
I’ve got some ideas, but I imagine I could exhaust those pretty quickly if the party is actually interested in the shows.
So what are some creative uses for spells that would almost certainly be impractical in combat, but could be very impressive to spectators?
I think I would need to let the targets of spells be more flexible for this event so they don’t need to actually attack anyone to show off their magic. They can knock over objects instead or let the spell take its course even if there is no creature being targeted.
A very disciplined wizard could cast grease and choose what type of grease is created, spreading bacon grease all over the cooking surfaces. Other wizards could cook the food with fire-based spells or maybe someone else cats heat metal to cook all the food.
Color Spray, Faerie Fire, and probably some others could be used in a Fog Cloud light show.
With magic mouth, there could be some inanimate objects directing people about where to go or announcing the next big event.
People could enter the Zone of Truth for a fun game of truth or dare with a spouse or close friend.
I expect there would be some magic tricks mixed in with the real magic
