Ex said confusing things

Long story short: he left me for someone else, it was a mess, we’re 4 months on now and I’m in a good position, promotion at work, nee place living with friends.

I had to pick up stuff from his family home on Saturday and he said nasty things again, but the flood gates opened at one point and he cried about how so much from our life was inaccessible to him because of his “world” he is in now. He’s not doing great in work, he asked if I miss him, and he cried saying he thought everyone hates him (our friends who supported me) and told me he walks around our city with anxiety and shame, fearing running into one of our friends. I actually had to comfort him because I was worried for him, the person he’s with who I’ve thought is controlling has completely isolated him and his confidence is at literal zero. Is this I’m realising the grass isn’t greener or? I have accepted that he probably still does love me as I do him but he got involved in mess and is at the beckon call of a perverted freak so there’s nothing I can do with that.
