How do you communicate with your product manager?

Engineers across different teams are struggling with our product managers who seem to be unable to do very basic things.

Example: Engineers looking at the blank Jira story description ask product manager to clarify what needs to be done? PM says go ask the stakeholder. Engineers then ask what team is that or who should we talk with.

Another example: After all the talks with other team, writing the design docs and code implementation, engineers demo the feature to the team. PM raises his concerns, engineers explain his particular concern can never happen because it’s not enabled in the code. Engineers also ask the PM to do the user acceptance tests. PM refuses and says he doesn’t see a point of him to do the UAT. Finally, he says he never requests this feature. Engineers have to pull all the meeting records to remind the PM that he was in all those meetings and agreed with everything.

Example 3: One of these PMs doesn’t even know the one and only system he manages had been decommissioned 6 months ago. And users have no access to it for 6 months.

Examples go on and on.

In my experience with previous companies, the PMs were always and always workaholics or like to micromanaging. I didn’t expect I would ever need to deal with the completely opposite kind of PMs.

Our scrum masters and EMs pretty much do nothing as well. But at least their laziness isn’t blocking the product from development.

What are your tips in this kind of situation?
