Struggling with "16 ways to defend a walled city"

I was really lookign forward to this book. But I'm really struggling. I'm 3 1/2 hr into the audiobook and I feel like its mostly been rambling anecdotes and tangents. I'm actually kind of getting annoyed by it.

Does this style prevail throughout?
