Possible “everyone is microchipped” future

A common trope in many scifi settings (Demolition Man is the first to come to mind) is for everyone to have a microchip implanted in them, for a variety of uses - as an ID, a form a payment, etc.

It occurs to me that such a scenario might occur not through government mandating it, but people doing it on their own. For example, pet owners microchipping their pets is already common. I could easily see parents microchipping their kids, for the exact same reason they microchip dogs. After a generation or two, you’d have an entire society with them.
