The future of BCIs vs Devices
I've been thinking a lot about BCIs lately (and not just because of the recent Neuralink update). It's easy to see how in a few decades we could conceivably have no more devices: all just servers and BCIs. From watching entertainment to working to listening to music to piloting a ship, all of it could be rendered in a VR or AR layer over your natural vision and hearing.
Only... I'm not sure I'd want that. I'm on my phone a lot sure, but the times I can establish a boundary and put it away are important. Not to mention a very real security concern! What happens if it is hacked? What happens if I'm arrested, and what do they do to disable my BCI when nowadays they'd take away your cell phone? Not to mention there's a certain element of self-expression with our devices in our devices, how we customize them in ways we can't with implant-telepathy. While I'm still optimistic for the technology, I think I might treat my BCI more like how we treat eye glasses: a minimalistic and personal but crucial thing that enhances other experiences. Personally I wouldn't mind still putting on a headset or holding a device that my BCI interacts with, even if it's not strictly necessary. But that's just me!
What do you suppose the attitude of the average person in the future might prefer? Will most people embrace a full-blown neural lace and live in a world without screens, or will they still desire the compartmentalization of all-in-one talismans devices, or maybe some other compromise between the two?
