What are your views on the "dinos are monsters" approach we've seen lately.
I've seen some discourse about this topic lately regarding whether the franchise should treat dinosaurs as villains or as monsters.
Personally, my thoughts are not as different from other people, minus one aspect (that I'll touch upon later). I do think, just because these beings are genetically altered, it doesn't make them less than just ordinary animals. Almost all of the dinos we've seen in the past are acting as how animals would act IRL. There's nothing monstrous about this. It's just how nature has worked since even before these creatures roamed the Earth. And the genetic alteration they are getting changes only their appearance and maybe gives them some natural abilities. This was the message of the first movies as well as the books.
Now... here's where I might sound like a hypocrite: I think some hybrids are... a different story. I think having hybrids kinda helps to have a monster-type creature without compromising the message that the dinos are just animals trying to survive. The reason I'm saying that is because some of the hybrids were always not acting as normal animals. The Indominous killed without eating anything; the Scorpios had a very weird fascination for fire and disrupted the normal balance of the ecosystem (diversity is supposed to help the ecosystem). I don't remember much from Fallen Kingdom so no commentary on that and the Spinoceraptors were very docile. The difference between some hybrids from normal dinosaurs is that the hybrids were made to not be normal animals by the scientists making them.
Sorry if I'm missing very important details.
EDIT: Wanted to add that yes, the JW movies haven't done a good job portraying dinos as regular animals.
