Using MDF/Hardboard in your leather project?

Has anyone used MDF or hardboard in their projects? I want to make a nice clipboard, likely with 1/8"(3mm) thick hardboard core. I will likely use a spray adhesive, and do an edge binding of some sort (chrome tan) - I may do an edge paint, but I lean towards bindings or rolled edges in general.

Does anyone have experience with this and have any advice? Or advice on an alternative solution? I can imagine that some may have bonded leather to MDF for making boxes as well, depending on the technique used.
