I removed this item from their trash; then they decided it was Damaged treasure and more recently, Open-Box treasure
While picking up some unrelated items, I saw a telescope box in their "send to crusher" pile inside the store. I took it to the inspection table, and besides being poorly packaged (boxes falling apart, eyepieces thrown together loose in a cardboard box, etc) I didn't see what was wrong with it at a glance.
I asked why it was being trashed, and was informed that it was locked to a customer account and couldn't be switched. I have a related telescope, and all that they include is a code for some software you can install on your phone to help you find things in the sky. You mount your phone onto the telescope and by using a mirror, it guides you which way to point the telescope. I haven't used the feature, but I have a license for it from another scope.
They wouldn't let me have it from their trash, or buy it, but they decided that it should be relisted as damaged. Since it was damaged, they said that it would have a low buy-it-now option, but they couldn't go outside of their rules and let me buy it then. OK, annoying, but fair enough. I repaired the boxes with their packaging tape; covered the open eyepiece receiver; arranged everything in the outer box, and put it on a table instead of throwing it in the crusher bin.
The next day they put it up for a 9+ day auction, with no instant-purchase option. It was marked Damaged until a couple of days ago, when they just switched it to Open Box because bids weren't getting high enough. They didn't even go to Partial, despite 100% knowing that the code/software access is missing.
I don't know if anything else is broken or missing. Buyer beware, they just change item condition when it suits, to generate more revenue. It could be a decent starter telescope for a child if nothing else is broken or missing, and the access codes can be used multiple times if the bidder knows someone or is part of a stargazing club.
Here is the auction link if you want to check out my dumpster-dive repackaging job. See their weird description trying to indicate that there is no access key included for StarSense software.
