SA defense and other questions.

I have heard many say that SA has some of the worst defense/defensive utility in the game. What exactly does this mean? Obviously it doesn't have a shield, but what does other weapons have that SA doesn't? Faster animations? I just started this game(likely going to main SA)and want to understand my weapon better.

Also, how does power axe mode work? Can't seem to get it to activate.
