Strange relationship?

Is anyone else finding this relationship strange? In the conversation with Ace he said something like 'I thought we wouldn't work out, you would never stay and I would never leave here'.

What do you mean he thinks maybe we'll have a chance? Does the MC have to make the difficult choice of staying in that city just to give the relationship a chance? If she loved him she would have to stay, but wouldn't he do the same for her? 🤔 I'm starting to rethink hahaha
