Missed dentist appointment

Hello! I hope somebody can head some light, because I'm blind with rage right now.

I missed my dentist appointment, which in itself is very miserable of me, I know. I was expecting to pay some form of penalty, but instead I recieved a bill as if the original procedure happened and a request to schedule a new appointment.

That's fun, given that I was going for a first part of getting a crown, so I owe them 400 euro now.

Is it common, is there a course of action? I'm so angry with myself and with the dentist, I don't want to pick up the phone and ask them about it.

Has someone gone through this?
