Switch 2 Gimmicks

Taking a look at the leaks and speculation, the Switch 2 seems to be the first console in a few generations to not have a major hardware gimmick. The Switch was a hybrid, the Wii U had the gamepad, and the Wii had motion controls.

Not surprisingly, the hybrid nature of the Switch is not something that Nintendo wants to get rid of, so it seems highly unlikely that we’d have a big hardware gimmick built into the console itself.

But Nintendo has to present something new with this console to differentiate it from the original Switch. I think in terms of gimmicks, Nintendo may go down two different routes: software gimmicks, and accessory gimmicks.

Nintendo’s strength is innovating with its franchises. They’re not trying to make big games, they’re trying to make fun games. And I think that having lots of extra tie-in software would be a great way to be different. Making fun little apps like Face-Raiders on the 3DS or the extra channels on the Wii could help provide short, fun experiences, and could even tie them in with their franchises. It could also work as a part of NSO.

The other gimmick I think could be accessories. The joy-cons are able to be utilized in various peripherals such as the Ring Fit ring, or the entirety of Labo. As long as the experience is fun with cheap peripherals, it could be a hit.

What do you guys think?
