What is considered an essential part of a drum kit/set?

Hello, im looking to buy my first ever drum kit/set and my first ever music instrument, but everywhere i look i see these 20+ piece drum kits and feel very overwhelmed, what is the base minimum that i need to start? And what are they called? (Im into metal songs and dont really want to play jazz or...)
