If everyone is so passionate about politics in the U.S. and everyone is so committed to their side, why do both sides struggle to find a good presidential representative?

It seems like many people are ashamed of the person that represents their party. Maybe I’m wrong, but I’ve noticed this the most with Joe Biden and Donald Trump. I just don’t understand why it’s not the best of the best from each side running for president. People always seem to be settling.
