Tips on buying a new car on Oahu
My only experience with buying a new car here was a few years ago when I bought my Ford Maverick. I went to one dealership, and they said they'd charge $5k-7k markup, and also force bundling of unnecessary paint protection, etc... Another dealership quoted $15k over MSRP for a $26k MSRP (!!!)
I saw a dealership on the mainland that listed one for MSRP, called them on the phone, and 5 minutes later I had paperwork to sign in my inbox. The whole process was seamless and I paid for the shipping cost, and they handled the logistics. It was great.
Costco Auto didn't really work at the time either, no dealerships were participating on Oahu.
I talked with a couple people I know who did buy new cars, and they described horror experiences like being at the dealership haggling for 8 hours just to get $2k over MSRP, and having to go around dealership to dealership just to even figure out what the price is. Is this normal?
I'm looking for some kind of SUV EV to replace my Tesla Model 3, but I'm finding it hard to shop around when I don't even know what the competitor prices are, and I'm not willing to go around to like 10 different dealerships just to find this out. I'm considering buying another Tesla simply for this reason, even though I'd prefer to have other options.
