Has any of you managed to avoid unsafe transfers? Has it cost you your job?
I am a student in OT school, and I'm in my first semester and I haven't started fieldwork yet. Through research through the internet, I learned that certain settings (e.g. SNFs) bring more risk of back injuries than others.
Did any of you manage to deliberately avoid transfers (or other movements) that you knew were unsafe for you? Did making such a decision lead to negative consequences, such as losing your job?
I'd also like to know the settings that have the highest risk for back injuries, and those that have the least risk. I haven't decided what setting I want to work in, but this is definitely a factor I will take into consideration.
Also, when looking for an OT job, what are the red flags (or green flags) to look out for in a workplace in terms of risk of getting a back injury?
Edit: I don't have any back/hip problems, nor any in the past. Just want some info so that I can prevent such problems in the future.
