Should I still bother learning Gantt charts?
I wanted to share some perspective on a debate I keep seeing among junior PMs about Gantt charts.
While we've mostly shifted to agile tools for day-to-day work, I still find myself pulling up MS Project at least monthly. Why? Because when you're presenting to the C-suite or working with external stakeholders, there's still nothing that beats a well-crafted Gantt chart for communicating the big picture. Just last quarter, it was a Gantt chart that helped me secure buy-in for a major digital transformation initiative.
The key is understanding where each tool shines. My teams run their daily operations in Jira, but for portfolio planning and executive communications, Gantt charts remain invaluable. I've mentored dozens of PMs over the years, and I always tell them the same thing: It's not about choosing one or the other – it's about knowing when to use each tool effectively.
Are you guys seeing similar patterns in your organizations? I'm particularly curious about how others are balancing traditional and agile tools in enterprise environments.
