I don't think Basic EX cards were designed for mobile.
So we all know this is a fast version of the physical card game. Many tests were done by Dena to get a nice balance for the game, but I'm not exactly sold on how they managed EX cards.
One major issue is the deck size and how we're guaranteed at least 1 basic Pokémon at the start. With a deck size of 20 and always starting with a basic Pokemon, one can have a few or many Pokémon in a deck, which I love!
However, since players only need 3 points to win, one wants to get a winning condition out asap. Combine that with the fact you can have most of these EX cards running by turn 3, you can take out most Pokémon before they even reach their stage 1-2 with 1 EX.
Also, you always generate energies, so EX cards (especially cards that create more energy) are so strong.
WHY is this an issue? It restricts the meta to a strict gameplay, which is focused on rushing.
There are many ways one can do to rebalance this issue.
My SUGGESTION: Change basic EX cards into a new type... let's call them Legendary.
What does this matter or do?
- Can't have a deck with only Legendary Pokémon.
- You aren't guaranteed a Legendary at the start.
- Pokéballs can't draw Legendary EX Pokémon.
You don't get these because all of these only apply to Basic Pokémon.
What's the point? The point is to reduce the following.
- Slow the energy pace of EX cards.
- Mixup the meta.
- Give weaker Pokémon a chance.
- Maybe see more stage 2 Pokémon.
This game is still new and could use a few tweaking to be more. I mean, there's always luck involved, and of course, EX cards can be beaten. Plus, there are cards made to counter them, but all these aren't reliable or also restrictive... just check out the variety in the pro scene.
