Should I do a PhD in organizational psychology?
I am stumped on my next move. For context, I live in the U.S. (also from here) and earned an MSc in Social and Organizational Psychology from a university in England in 2020. During my master’s program, I became very interested in becoming an organizational consultant and am currently doing an internship in that field. I work full time at a college as an academic advisor and am fortunate to be doing the internship at the school that I work for simultaneously (just in the organizational development department, and I am hoping to get a consultant role on their team later this year after I finish my internship). My ultimate career goal would be to start my own organizational consulting business (years down the road), and I would also like to teach a few classes on the side as an adjunct professor in psychology. I am passionate about teaching but don’t plan for it to be my full time career just due to the seemingly impossible odds of finding a full time and high quality professor position. My desires for earning a PhD are so that I can be a competitive applicant for teaching roles and also so that I can having stronger qualifications and field knowledge when I start my business later in life. Also, it might sound silly, but I just really enjoy learning and being in school. My desires are not research oriented- obviously I’m happy to do research to earn the degree but I wouldn’t be focused on that or publishing after the PhD is over really. So I’m not sure if that means I shouldn’t do a PhD at all or if the reasons I mentioned previously are strong enough to go for it. If I do go back to school, I plan to move back to Europe to pursue the degree. Would love to hear any and all advice about your PhD experiences and what you’d recommend! Thanks :)
