A recent post got me thinking-intended for Americans

A fellow Canadian posted about why there was so much negativity in this group. I am new to travel to the Philippines. Met a Philippine woman who is educated, caring and in almost three years I have not seen a negative. I am also an old school liberal and feeling out of touch with our current direction in Canada. We are a rich country and could simply do better. Never had a desire to visit Asia at all. Frankly I have always been most comfortable in the outdoors of Canada than exploring different cultures. When my spouse’s father got sick (he was past 90) we spent many months there last year. The love and caring I saw from a large extended family was something I had never seen or experienced before. And I have always thought my family to be very supportive and caring. My wife’s family are at a whole different level. I now “think” i might be happier in PH in my retirement years. And yes my relationship with my 3 children is good. They are educated and doing well here. But Canada is veering very far right. I have always thought we were about 10 years behind what we see south of the border. In my 70’s I am not going to suddenly spend my time fighting this change. But I don’t get the right ringers living in PH. Clearly lots of MAGAs and Republicans. Fine that we would differ on how we like to treat our fellow human I have been seeing that my whole life. Shitty people exist in all cultures. But unless you are extreme maga (which basically implies being a racist and anti feminist in my world view), what would make you stay in PH. yes your dollar goes farther, (and that does appeal to me too) but is that not really an issue with the support structure of your own country?. I have not made a decision, but will spend much more time there to understand the country better. In the interim, I just don’t get it. The only explanation I see is that it is the desire to exploit people who are less fortunate, and I think the desire to feel superior. But that is at its core what fuels MAGA. I suspect the response to this will not be good. But if you are one of those people, please look in the mirror hard before commenting.
