Be Careful Using the New Tire Configuration Setting in the Latest Rivian Update
I’ve put 35,000 miles on my R1T and have never run out of charge—until today. I’m on a 1,000-mile road trip for spring break, and last night, I decided to change my tire setting in the app to try and get a more precise range estimate.
I run 22” Sport wheels and recently swapped to Goodyear Wrangler Steadfast HT as an aftermarket tire. I’ve been happy with the tires and thought I had a good handle on my estimated range. When I changed the tire setting in the app, it forced a reset of the vehicle. I switched from the Pirelli Scorpion Zero to the Pirelli Scorpion EV setting, thinking it would be a closer match.
Everything seemed fine. For my second charge stop, the truck estimated I would arrive with 30 miles of range left, which seemed like a good buffer. But as we got closer, the remaining miles started dropping faster than expected—at 50 miles remaining, I had only 25 miles to go. Then, I noticed something odd: my speedometer showed 75 mph, but my GPS showed 73 mph.
Then, at 5% battery, the power drop was drastic. The truck lost power much faster than I expected, and I came to a stop just 5 miles from the charger.
Thankfully, AAA came through, and the tow truck arrived in 10 minutes.
After this experience, I tried a different setting in the app—one for an aftermarket all-terrain tire—and it seems to be much more accurate. I have no idea why choosing the Pirelli Scorpion EV setting resulted in such an inaccurate range estimate, but I wanted to share my experience so others don’t get caught off guard.
TL;DR: Be careful when changing the tire configuration in the app, especially if you’re running aftermarket tires. The wrong setting can drastically impact your range estimate.
