Starter motor damaged?

so i crashed last week, got the bike back the next day and it started up perfect no additional help needed. then i went back the next day and it wouldn’t start at first, gave a bit of throttle and it fired up, thought it may be because i had little to no fuel so put some in today and the starter was making a weird noise almost as if it was clanking or knocking something, still after a bit of throttle it started. it sounds like something with the starter is broke but i have no idea what. anyone got any ideas?
