Helped an Elderly Stray, Semi-Stressed on what to do.

So three days ago I noticed that one of the strays that meander around my apartment complex had a really torn up ear. It looked sort of bad before but when I found him this specific day it was really gory. I went and got a live trap and some towels from my sister and tried to lure him to my apartment. (I caught the wrong stray the first night but I digress.) Yesterday I found him laying outside and sprung into action to lure him to my apartment. I caught him and ran to a vet- long story short second vet visit wound me up around $700. I know it is just a stray but he has an infection in the gored part of his ear already and had ear mites. They said I would need to take care of him for 14 days and I figured out where I’m going to put him and he’s safe and I made him a comfortable bed. My mom said that his cage smells like pee and I need to clean it.

The issue is that I know I should take the blankets and wash them, I know I should clean him off, I know I should wipe down the bottom of the crate. But what am I missing? I am thinking of grabbing my cat shampoo and doing a water shampoo mix to rub him down with. The only thing is that it’s the middle of winter and I dont want him to get sick. Any tips? I am considering taking him in as my own cat after I finish helping nurse him back to health. I already have a cat and I’m praying that they will get along. I am so nervous that maybe all of this is just for nothing.
