So… Sam’s personality change throughout the series. I wanna talk about that.
I just find it really interesting.
In season 1 Sam’s personality was a bit more innocent, maybe even a little bit bubbly (not entirely though then given that he was still mostly a reserved guy and was more soft spoken, but I think it was definitely there time to time, especially with people he felt most comfortable with, like Dean, and Jess also.) He definitely laughed and smiled more. Plus he was a lot more playful with Dean (that one episode where they literally had a full on prank war in season 1 still kills me lmao). He definitely had a lot more spirit and was overall a fairly happy person, despite what he went through with Jess.
As the series went on Sam’s personality slowly started to roughen up a bit. It’s like watching a light start out bright, and then overtime watching it slowly get dimmer. But the funny thing is you don’t notice it at first. Or I didn’t anyway. It felt like such a subtle and slow transition. I didn’t fully realize the change until I actually looked back at the first season and saw the way Sam was at that time. Very similar to how Jensen changed Deans voice to becoming deeper overtime, and you don’t notice it entirely until you look back and see just how much higher pitched his voice was. That really felt like how Sam’s character was. Later on he’d still have that sarcasm and snarky comebacks here and there, maybe he’d smile or laugh a little bit, but it stopped being as genuine as it used to be. If he did laugh or smile it wasnt so energetic and didn’t feel like he meant it. I kinda showed that he was growing and maturing more and more into a full grown adult, but also showed that all the crap he had to go through throughout the show was really taking a toll on him more and more.
It’s just so sad to think about and watch. I love season 1 Sam with all my heart, and I always find myself missing him the further I get into the series.
