im tired of being told that 'revealing' clothes are the cause of r*pe
i (15f) come from a indian joint family. my grandparents are conservative, super religious and all. thankfully, my parents are pretty modern and chill.
i was going to tuition today and i typically walk there because its only a short 10 minute walk, so i avoid going by car unless im late. like usual, i had almost left the house for my tuition until my grandma called out to me, saying "where are you going". i told her that im going to tuition. she proceeded to say, "wearing that?" (i was wearing a simple crop top with jeans). i was in a bit of a rush so i didnt really think about her comment and simply said yes.
she then began to guilt trip me by saying that i should change my clothes, if a man saw me wearing something like that he will get a wrong idea and think im trying to make advances on him or something and will harm/r*pe me and how they cant afford to lose me, how hard it'd be and all. i was befuddled by that, like at this point she should really know better. blaming a woman for wearing 'revealing' clothes and then saying that "obviously the girl would be harmed/r*ped, she was asking for it with those type of clothes." [an actual instance of her saying something like this is when my brother and i were talking to her about the kolkata r*pe case. she said that "why would the doctor be working for such long hours in the hospital?" mind you, she herself is a doctor]
and the fact that i live near india's r*pe capital doesnt help.
i can see where she is coming from, she's just worried about me but this really triggered me, man. i am genuinely sick that even now we blame women for a man's actions. like i find it absurd that we still tell our daughters to cover up (whilst knowing that r*pe has nothing to do with clothes, there are multiple cases of little girls/elder women getting r*ped, i highly doubt they were wearing 'revealing' clothes) rather than teaching our sons to not act on their desires and all. im not saying that we shouldnt be careful, but blaming assault and all on the woman is weird as hell in my opinion.
at the end i had to change into a full-sleeved top.
