Days when travel meant investment: London to Tokyo in 36 hours
This documentary on BOAC's new route to Tokyo is interesting on a number of counts. In 1953, you visited 14 countries in a day and a half - but on a scheduled route, not a tour. It featured a sleek new jet airliner (the Comet, which was later retired due to safety issues with version 1) and saw many places only just recovering from the devastation of WWII.
Japan was yet to become the centre of technological innovation and manufacture; Siam's capital, Bangkok, had a transport system centred on the canals, not choked highways.
