Democrats are facing an existential problem

In order to win a presidential election, neither party can win by appealing only to their core base. They need to capture that base plus more moderate partisans and centrists willing to vote for their side (there is a core on the right and the left that will never vote for the opposing party). For arguments sake let’s say it of 30/40/30 (I am not going to argue this point because I am sure there are plenty who think the split is something different (here on Reddit I am sure there are people who believe it is 70% far left, 10% middle and 20% far right).

Right now, some portion of the democrat base is angry because democrats are not left enough (massively over-represented here on Reddit) while moderate dems and independents feel that the party is moving too left, too fast. Now the dems are struggling with who they want to be: do they double down and cater to those who want to move further left (especially on social issues) or do they take a more centrist approach and subdue the social progressivism while channelling FDR?

My personal belief is that the former will result in more losses for the dems.

Edit: the other thing that I think derails the leftists is that their anti-corporate message too often comes across as anticapitalism and while I, like many Americans, can get on board with anticorporatism, anticapitalism is a bridge too far.
