McNair scholar

To be a McNair scholar, you have to be both first generation and low income. I am wondering how McNair verifies first generation status - and how it is if it does not align with their definition of it.

Can you get in trouble if you say you are first gen, but it is not their definition of first gen?

I am 100% low income.
