Take Home Exercise

My partner did a (4th and final round) take home exercise involving AI insights for a dashboard regarding ads and campaign management. However, when she finished the interview she said they told her they were expecting her AI solution to be built outside of the platform even though the exercise never stipulated this. Is this fair? How should she have responded to their concern that she didn’t build a solution relevant to the company’s problem?
