first time reader here, i have a question

im reading the first book and wondering how long it takes to get good? im usually not a fantasy reader and im getting sort of bored reading the opening, however ive heard great things about this series. when does it usually suck you in or what did it for you? is it the entrance of a character, an event, certain chapter etc? i want to hear your personal opinions.
