Arcane Character Personality Test: results & analysis
Hey everyone!
I'm the guy who made the "Complete Arcane Character Personality Test". Now that 2,500 people have taken the quiz, I thought it would be fun to come back with some more facts and data!
You can find the previous reddit post here.
MBTI TYPES: ARCANE
First, I'll finally 'officially' disclose the complete list of MBTI types for the characters, with the adjustments I had to make.
I started with the consensus on personality-database. I only had to tweak the type of 3 characters out of 16, which was pretty cool. When I started this fun project, I didn't dare hope that 13 characters had different types already!
(Middle column is the character type in our test. Right column is the reference on personality-db, and for those that didn't match, I also added the second-most voted type.)
Character | Quiz Type | Consensus |
---|---|---|
Vi | ESTP | same |
Caitlyn | INFJ | same |
Viktor | INTJ | same |
Heimerdinger | INTP | same |
Mel | ENTJ | same |
Silco | ENTP | INTJ/ENTJ |
Ekko | INFP | ENTP/ISFP |
Jayce | ENFJ | same |
Jinx | ENFP | same |
Grayson | ISTJ | same |
Claggor | ISFJ | same |
Ambessa | ESTJ | same |
Vander | ESFJ | ISTP/ENFJ |
Sevika | ISTP | same |
Isha | ISFP | same |
Mylo | ESFP | same |
As you see, the 3 characters I ended up changing were Silco (from INTJ to ENTP), Ekko (from ENTP to INFP) and Vander (from ISTP/ENFJ, it's very close, to ESFJ).
If there was a better way to make it work, I didn't find it! For instance, I could have left Ekko as his consensus ENTP and move Silco to INFP, but that just felt too wrong to me.
Here is a little reminder of what each letter tries to define, according to myersbriggs.org:
- Extraversion (E) / Introversion (I):
People who prefer Extraversion feel energized by interaction in the outer world of people and things. Their attention is naturally drawn in this outward direction.
People who prefer Introversion feel energized when reflecting on concepts and ideas in their inner world. Their attention is naturally drawn in this inward direction.
- Sensing (S) / Intuition (N):
People who prefer Sensing pay more attention to information that is concrete and tangible. They focus on what is, by paying attention to specific details and facts. They rely on perception through their five senses (trust experience).
People who prefer Intuition pay more attention to the patterns and possibilities in the information they receive. They focus on what could be, by looking at the big picture and making connections between the facts. They use their five senses, too, but rely on perception through insights and hunches (trust inspiration).
- Thinking (T) / Feeling (F):
People who prefer Thinking put more weight on objective principles and impersonal facts when decision-making. They focus on logic and analysis.
People who prefer Feeling put more weight on personal concerns and the people involved when decision making. They focus on values and relationships.
- Judging (J) / Perceiving (P):
People who prefer Judging like a more structured and organized lifestyle. They like to control their environment by making plans or at least knowing what the plans are when others make them.
People who prefer Perceiving like a more flexible and open-ended lifestyle. Rather than control their environment, they want to experience it through exploring options.
RESULTS
Now the fun part: analyzing the results! There are 2,500 so far, mostly from Arcane subreddits, since I didn't advertise much elsewhere.
Most common in our test is Claggor, followed by Ekko and Grayson.
Rarest is Mylo, followed by Mel and Vi.
I thought it would be fun to compare these results from Arcane subreddits to the general population. (There are many different stats out there, I just went with what I found in this reddit post.)
I sorted this table starting with the most common results in our Arcane personality test. :)
Character | Answers | % | in gen pop |
---|---|---|---|
Claggor (ISFJ) | 277 | 11,1 | 8,4 |
Ekko (INFP) | 230 | 9,2 | 6,4 |
Grayson (ISTJ) | 212 | 8,5 | 15,9 |
Caitlyn (INFJ) | 193 | 7,7 | 2,3 |
Viktor (INTJ) | 189 | 7,6 | 2,6 |
Vander (ESFJ) | 185 | 7,4 | 5,7 |
Isha (ISFP) | 177 | 7,1 | 6,6 |
Jinx (ENFP) | 173 | 6,9 | 8,2 |
Heimerdinger (INTP) | 171 | 6,8 | 4,8 |
Sevika (ISTP) | 152 | 6,1 | 9,8 |
Ambessa (ESTJ) | 135 | 5,4 | 9 |
Jayce (ENFJ) | 132 | 5,3 | 2,2 |
Silco (ENTP) | 96 | 3,8 | 4,3 |
Vi (ESTP) | 79 | 3,2 | 6,1 |
Mel (ENTJ) | 61 | 2,4 | 1,8 |
Mylo (ESFP) | 38 | 1,5 | 6 |
Here are the results by "trait":
Extraversion (E) / Introversion (I): 899 (36%) / 1601 (64%) - compared to 43-57 in general population = more I on Arcane reddit
Sensing (S) / Intuition (N): 1255 (50,2%) / 1245 (49,8%) - 67-33 in general population = more N on Arcane reddit
Thinking (T) / Feeling (F): 1095 (44%) / 1405 (56%) - 54-46 in general population = more F on Arcane reddit
Judging (J) / Perceiving (P): 1384 (55%) / 1116 (45%) - 48-52 in general population = more J on Arcane reddit
Considering both ways of looking at results, I think it will come to no surprise that redditors have a tendency to be more introverted (7% point difference).
But the biggest bias is actually the S/N repartition, where there is far more N in our results than in general population (17% point difference).
Then there's T/F, with more F on Arcane's reddit (8% point diff). And more J (7% point diff).
Summary
For a way to sum that up, I'd say although Claggor is the most common type, there's far more Caitlyn (INFJ) in here than out there! Yay us! The second-most represented compared to general population being Viktor (my type, actually).
Most under-represented is, pretty weirdly, Grayson, but I'm thinking the gen pop stats may have a bias there as she's so much more common than anything else. Then it's poor Mylo, who almost nobody is haha.
NOW FOR A FULL DISCLOSURE
If you've read all that, I feel like you deserve a little treat… So here is a secret insight I never revealed before: I actually… cheated.
You know that last question, with only 2 answers? It's supposed to be a joke answer, giving no points towards any trait.
Well… It really started as a the little private joke, I swear! But then I started using it to add and remove points for a few select results.
Why? Well, when I first shared the quiz, the results were SO heavily skewed towards certain characters that it was just no fun. I guess that was hard to avoid since the population is very targeted (reddit Arcane fans who like personality tests)
More than half the answers were either Claggor or Grayson, while the Vi counter stayed stuck at 1 forever. And that felt no good to me: while I wanted the quiz to be accurate, there's no fun in everyone getting the same thing. I wanted at least a few people to feel good about getting Vi or Mel, or a bit edgy for getting Silco, etc.
So I went to work: first, I refined the wording of certain questions and results. It was actually a very good exercise which really helped make the quiz better.
That corrected things a little, but after many adjustments and a few more hundred answers, I had to admit that the bias in this select population was just too heavy to overcome 100% organically.
So I just made the last "joke" question score points towards certain characters. It's very minor (1 or 2 points here and there), not enough to make the results irrelevant, just enough to push someone on the brink of getting a rare result over the edge! Vi and Mel are still extremely rare, they are just not extinct. Claggor and Grayson are still in the top 3, just not overwhelmingly so.
With these adjustments + more people doing the quiz from various sources, the results have become a lot more diverse than initially! The only weird thing is Mylo suddenly dropped off the face of the earth, despite being not that rare at first. At that point I was too fed up to switch it up so I'll have to live with it lol.
I'll wrap up for now, hope you enjoyed the quiz and analysis! As always, feedback is welcome.
