Thoughts on GBB24 as a beatboxer (disappointed...)
I've been a beatboxer for 10 years+ and been watching content since SBX channel was named "Pepouni".
I'm disappointed in the direction of the scene. It feels like GBB is trying to impress non-beatboxers more than actual beatboxers. Props to everyone for the amazing event and energy, I still had a REALLY great time in the event, but it will probably be my last live event.
I don't like the fact that more than 60% of the event performances were not raw beatbox, especially when we bring the best people that can represent our art form (Mad TwinZ, FootboxG, Bataco, NaPoM, ...) and they still perform using devices and produced tracks.
For the solo battles, I'm disappointed that they were literally about who can be the loudest, there is no world (or multiverse?) where as a beatboxer you listen to Julard and think that he's a better beatboxer than Osis, Helium or Wing (most complete beatboxer in my opinion), DEN, Remix.
I really love Julard's style but let's be honest, he's light years away from these guys, he still has room to grow, work on his slighty shitty throat bass... dropping bass and some powerful kicks/bass sounds doesn't make you a World class beatboxer.
I can't see him representing beatbox as a world champion on a show, or exhibition of the art form where it's obviously wont be about being powerful, or even just an online beatbox competition lol. (Shoutout to Osis, Dropical, Antilt, Zer0, Exallos, Slykku, ...)
As for the loop category, I'm obviously missing the days where it was actually "produced from the mouth" like MB14, Mando, Ibarra, Wawad,... even Beatness, Thorsen, Rythmind and Syjo still show a good usage of the effects with balance. However, in the case of Raje for instance, I feel like he belongs to the Producer category, it was weird watching him againt Syjo, felt completely different categories.
P.S.: One more thing that the live sound system doesn't show is the quality of sounds, Wing's quality of basic sounds is GODLIKE, the sound precision is completely disregarded and invisible in such events.
As a beatboxer, I think going forward, the best way for the art form to continue its grwoth is through online battle formats like the BBU (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a7wBYN\_Odqs) and SMYM (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybCjkpgwb9c).
The current live audio setup isn't fair to all beatboxers, and they shouldn't be punished for it. Otherwise, we will end up with amazing beatboxers like DEN retiring? or being pushed against their style towards a more powerful live sounds and lose their originality (enough of the inward liproll spam already, for real). For that, we need to provide the right platform for everyone.
I'm curious to see if other people feel the same way, all opinions are welcome!
P.S.: I hope this didn't come out as rude, this is just how I feel, much love to everyone, all the performers and organizers!
