Jiu-Jitsu & High Functioning Autism
Hello, I suffer from Asperger's Syndrome (Assburgers if you're a South Park fan) and I do Jiu Jitsu. Throughout my entire life my interest in sports was practically non-existent, despite my family's deep passion for all things athletic, I was always the scrawny, awkward, uncoordinated writer. Around the time I was 9 I was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, for those who don't know, Asperger's is a form of high functioning autism, meaning although my intelligence isn't necessarily impaired, other aspects such as motor skills and coordination as well as social skills are hindered. Even tasks as simple as running or tying my shoes were either awkward or extremely difficult. You see my father is a combat sports fanatic and growing up that really rubbed off on me, I remember being a kid and watching the Lawler/Condit fight with my dad and being completely hooked on the sport of MMA. I'm currently 14 and I decided to take up Jiu Jitsu both out of passion and as a form of coping with my slight disabilities. I find grappling to be the perfect blend of art, and sport, the technique, finesse, and physicality on display is absolutely captivating to me. Never have I felt in better shape, had better coordination, or even the ability to conversate with others with less anxiety like I do now. I may never be a world champion, but the effect this sport has had on me is something I'll always carry with me.
