Why Does Sallah Get a Pass?
I watched Dial of Destiny last night and was pretty shocked to see Sallah show up, even for basically just a cameo. Now to be clear, I like Sallah in the movies. I like Rhys-Davies' performance. I think he's an enjoyable presence! But also he's an Arab Egyptian character, ("Sallah Mohammed Faisel el-Kahir") played by a Welsh actor, doing a generic "foreign" accent, and in makeup that can generously be described as "bronzered." His character traits include having a shitload of kids, and in Last Crusade he's fixated on acquiring camels so he can trade them to his brother-in-law. It's not a very culturally sensitive performance!
But I've never really seen anyone come for him in these movies. Even on the pod the guys called Last Crusade the "non-problematic" one in comparison to Temple of Doom (which to be clear, has bigger problems) and spent all three episodes talking about how great Sallah is and how we need more Sallah. Is there something I'm missing here?
