"Southern Water" Scam
A person called me today (and a month ago) claiming they were Southern Water. They said my account had an overdue balance.
The phone number was 0300 131 2110, which is awfully similar to the official Southern Water numbers
They will start off by asking you to confirm the last 3 digits of your postcode, date of birth and email address. This is giving them free information. Which actually they might already know since Southern Water was hacked and had a massive data leak early this year. Official statement from Southern Water here: https://www.southernwater.co.uk/latest-news/cyber-attack-update-for-customers/
They then sent me a KlickPay payment link. Which I thought seemed suspicious. From what I've researched, I don't even know if this KlickPay company even exists.
Just want to put this out there as a reminder to be careful with scams like this. They might seem to know everything about you (because of the data leak), and they might sound really nice over the phone, asking how your day's been and such.
They also pressure you to pay by staying on the line while you access the link, saying you will incur late payment charges if you pay on the official website cuz it "tAkEs 3 DaYs To PrOcEsS".
But this is how phishers get you, they lower your guard and next thing you know you've lost 100 quid. It's better to be safe than sorry.
Also want to mention, there is another popular form of phishing scam. Scammers will create websites that might look identical to the legitimate one, but the domain name is not the same (e.g. youtube.com vs you.tube.com). If you log in on a fake website, they will be able to steal your username and password. Always check the domain name.
That's about it, cya :D
