Mental health issue with daily progress report.
*** NO POLITICAL AFFILIATION NOR THIS MEANT TO BE POLITICAL ***
With the recent change from the DOGE team, enforcing that all federal workers have to do a weekly report, many are bringing up the psychological issues that could affect people's mental health.
I just find it really strange and funny how, in software, especially in ALL aspects of software engineering (from QA to developers), we were ALWAYS subjected to follow the Scrum methodology since its inception to report DAILY, not just weekly. Not just 5 sentences through an email, but a verbal one in either a room full of people or on a team call, where one person is always delegated to report this DIRECTLY to upper management. But yet, no one has ever sounded the alarm on how this would heavily affect our mental health.
Comparing this to the recent change in the federal workforce, where they are already saying that this is a form of psychological torture, and they only have to report WEEKLY in 5 sentences through an email, I can't help but feel like society has been turning a blind eye to those of us in the software field... to the point where those of us who are successful in this field are not only turning a blind eye, but ENCOURAGING and supporting these mental "methodologies."
I don't want to keep this post too long as I want to leave room for more discussion and perspective. But in summary, doesn't it feel like our field has been subjected to a MUCH HIGHER mental aptitude standard than all the other fields? Just to name a few: - A library of knowledge on software and tools - Multiple different programming languages - Database knowledge - Debugging and problem-solving engineering problems - Source control
The best part of this is that all of these requirements are expected of you to produce DAILY! And an end result/solution by the end of two weeks.
There’s so much more that I don't even want to try to remember and summarize in layman’s terms. And yet, somehow, this is not good enough to prevent us from being replaced simply by offshore workers and AI. That, for lack of a better word, is quite insane.
