Need Advice. Thinking of Rehoming Our Two Dogs. AITAH?
Hey Dads-
I’m in a bit of a pickle. I’ve got two dogs, both of which we’ve had since puppies. A nine year old minpin and an eight year old cattle dog mix. I love them both dearly but I’m not doing them right for a number of reasons.
First, my 21 month old comes first. Full stop. I also do all the cooking for the family, laundry, and tack on a demanding job with a long commute in the afternoons to pick up our little dude.
My wife originally adopted the minpin but had pushed her away once pregnancy started. The cattle dog is “mine” theoretically.” He was also my closest pal until the baby came.
Here’s my hang ups. Wife doesn’t want the dogs around the baby. I get it. The cattle dog nips. He also barks all the time since the baby started walking. We don’t let them interact much because of his past nips, so getting him used to it has been difficult. I’m not being fair to him either - because of the baby, work, other responsibilities, I don’t have time to give him the attention he needs. My average day starts at 5am. I’m home with the baby around 5pm. Then it’s chores, which include walking the dogs, feeding the baby, laundry, general cleaning, and anything I can do to prep dinner. Around 7, I get about half an hour to sit before making dinner. 730-9 is cooking, eating, and a little relaxing, then off to bed.
I’d love some advice. I want our household to run smoother, I want the dogs to be happy, and it would be nice to not have to worry about my son getting too close to the dog. For the record, he has not nipped my son and has always been very affectionate. He’s only nipped my wife and I in the cattle dog way, i.e. when he’s herding. He’s licked my son in a loving way a ton. The walking pisses him off though.
