[review] One Gear Custom Mexican Style Gloves review

After a couple of weeks of regular (4-6 times a week) use, here's my brief review on this amazing pair.

One Gear Philippines is a Cebu based combat gear manufacturer and, to my knowledge, the only Philippine based manufacturer who can create Mexican style/puncher's style boxing gloves.

The leather is definitely top tier; felt smooth and I couldn't find any loose threads ok the gloves. Very solid build overall.

When compared to the windy bgvh, you can see the cuff length is similar. The fit is also more snug than the newer Windy BGVH (which is already snug). I doubt you'll have room to insert a knuckle pad but given the knuckle padding of this pair, you won't need them.

Unlike the fairtex bgv9, my knuckles felt more protected.

Also unlike the bgv9, there is some allowance to do some Muay Thai style clinching (which was awkward to do with the bgv9).

Wrist protection is still good and similar to the windy bgvh.

I specified to One Gear that I'll be using these mostly for the heavy bag; given this premise, I do not recommend this pad configuration for sparring as the padding felt very dense, similar or prolly more dense than the bgv9. However , if you specify to One Gear that you'll need a sparring gloves, I'm confident they will use a different padding to accommodate your needs.

Attaching comparison pix with this pair and with the windy bgvh (16oz) and the twins special bgvl 3 (14oz). For reference, my One Gear pair is 16oz.

Also attaching a couple of videos to demonstrate the feedback on the pads, the bag and the wall target.

To summarize:

  • Excellent knuckle protection
  • Has leeway for Muay Thai style clinching
  • Superb build quality; can easily go toe-to-toe with Fairtex
  • be careful applying leather conditioner; 2b's face behind the knuckle area was a heat press patch and I suspect the leather conditioner caused the pattern to "peel off". This shouldn't be a deal breaker tho, as the leather quality is still there and minus the pattern peeling, the leather is still pristine!
