USS New Jersey (BB-62) battle flag

I’ve been meaning to share this for awhile!

This is a replica of the Battleship New Jerseys battle flag. US warships have a unique battle flag they often fly while underway and during, well, battle. It’s a morale booster and a unique identifier in the chaos of battle.

The yellow field, the red, blue, and grey make it all pop.

“Firepower for freedom” was the ship’s motto beginning with her 3rd commissioning for Vietnam, in 1968. It followed her through to her 4th commissioning in 1982-1991. Previously, her mottos were “Peace through Strength” (2nd commissioning: 1950-1957) and nothing when first commissioned in 1943-1948.

WETSU is an acronym that stands for “We Eat This Shit Up.”

It’s a beautiful and unique flag. I spent a week on her as a Sea Cadet in 2012, and fell in love with her. I was present when she departed for dry dock in Spring 2024, when I saw this flag being flown. I knew I had to have it, and thanks to my dad for tracking this down!
