New to FO76 coming from FO4. Interested in some early game advice.

I'm playing on Xbox after putting a couple hundred hours into a couple Fo4 play-throughs. Thoroughly enjoyed playing 4. Starting 76 I realize there is very little hand-holding, in my opinion. I'm level 27 right now I think.

A couple questions I'm hoping to get some help with:

• What should I be doing early game? I'm kind of following the main quests right now, though I get side-tracked exploring quite regularly. Is following story-line the way to go early?
• What's with the events I keep seeing on-screen notices about and read about here? Should I be participating as a relatively low-level player? I see other players in my world are regularly level >200 and I don't want to show up to an event and just get demolished because I'm so weak.
